Car Free Journeys – Cocoa Beach/Space Coast of Florida -March 2014 By Steve Atlas For the past few weeks, my family and I have wished the ice and snow would go awa - and so have many other people, all over the United States. Don’t you wish you could escape it all in a warm setting with lots of great beaches that you can walk to? Then, you will want to check out Cocoa Beach and the Space Coast of Central Florida: the focus of this month’s Car Free Journey. Cocoa Beach and the Space Coast of Florida A great reason to visit is the 72 miles of beaches along Florida’s Atlantic Coast. You can stay here and walk to beaches and many other attractions, restaurants, and entertainment. And when you want to take a break from the beach, you can take a local bus to Cape Canaveral: home of the United States Space Program. Here, the Space Shuttle ATLANTIS is on permanent display. Port Canaveral is the second largest cruise port in the United States—and local boosters claim it will beat Miami and become the largest U.S. cruise port by 2015. The Brevard Zoo is one of the top 10 small zoos in the United States, and it is just a bus ride away. Getting Here The best way to get here is to fly into Orlando International Airport. From there, take the Cocoa Beach Shuttle (http://www.cbshuttle.com/ or call toll-free (888) 784-4144 (or 321/631-4144) for reservations. The shuttle vans operate every ½ hour from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (and every two hours from Cocoa Beach hotels from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) During these hours, the rate for one person is $33, two people: $55, and $10 for each additional passenger. The shuttle will take you to any Cocoa Beach hotel. There is limited direct service to Melbourne International Airport. Delta has direct service from Atlanta. U.S. Air has direct service from Charlotte, North Carolina. From Melbourne, you can take Melbourne Airport Express (www.melbourneairportexpress.com) toll-free (800) 826-4544 or (321) 724-1600. The one-way fare to Cocoa Beach is $49 for the first passenger, $10 for each additional passenger. You can also take a local SCAT bus (http://www.ridescat.com/transit/general-information) call (321) 633-1878. Take a Route 26 bus from the Airport to Cocoa Beach. If necessary, you can transfer to a Route 9 bus (formerly the Beach Trolley) any day except Sunday. The trip takes a little over an hour and costs $1.25 one way ($.60 for seniors). For those times when you need a taxi, AAA Taxi (www.AAATaxiOnline.com) (321) 868-8888 is a good choice. Where to Stay Most Cocoa Beach hotels are along route A1A, and are served by SCAT Route 9 (formerly the Beach Trolley). You can generally walk to at least one beach, and several restaurants and attractions. For a list of local hotels and their contact information, visit http://www.visitcocoabeach.com/Stay.html.
